My Reflections

And Relax . . .

If 2020-2021 has taught me anything it has most taught me the necessity to relax. With so much happening that none of us were expecting, I learned to value time with those I love, respect and enjoy being around.

It’s also so important to enjoy some time with yourself doing what brings you joy.

I learned that some things I once viewed as necessary may not have been so important. This also helped me to find more balance in my life, with personal life, work life and my spiritual life. When one part overwhelms the others exponentially, the equation of our lives can lose focus.

Spending time doing nothing, alone or with others, is not a waste of time. I have found a lot of calmness, peace and time to think more clearly in those moments. Relaxing is not a bad use of time. It provides us with more time.

Taking a break when the weather is especially nice, just because you can.

Laughing, dancing and talking with friends and/or family are some of the best forms of relaxing that I’ve experienced over this past summer. Finding who you need in life helps us to stay healthy, happy and living the lives we are meant to live. It also helps to keep us accountable.

Find your people and relax together just as strongly as you support one another in the other portions of your lives.

Relaxing definitely looks different at various times and can be very different for each of us, but it is so crucial to our mental health. While we should all take care of our physical bodies, this past year has taught us so much of the importance of mental health for all of us. No one is one dimensional. We are multifaceted for a reason.

Whether it’s time to relax or time to work, stay persistent in living a life of balance.

If you need more balance, make it happen. Value yourself. Value others. Make it happen. You may need to start small, or you may be able to drastically change your life immediately, but whatever you do . . . relax.

If you need someone to tell you, it’s a gift to yourself and others when you spend time relaxing. Life is too short, and we all need time to enjoy as much of it as we possibly can.

Till You Fear No More

Going through the day

Feeling good to be alive

Have family and friends

In a country where I can thrive

Doing what I can

To make this world a better place

Shine a light upon injustice

Trying to eradicate the hate

For while our brothers and our sisters

Continue to live in fear

While too many just see their color

Wanting them all to disappear

Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor,
George Floyd tragically gone

Yet, these injustices persist

While too many have just moved on

If you’ve never been afraid

Of living just as you were born

Being seen as inferior

Even worthless or ignored

When will more finally see

My Black sisters and Black brothers

I see you, I love you

And I’m glad that you were born

For you add value to this world

With your talents and your gifts

While the glorious shades of your skin

Add beauty only you can give

You are strong

You are worthy

And all of this you know

But until you are truly free from hate

You’ll never walk alone.

Poetry

BY MY STRENGTH

The battle you have feared

You’ve already overcome

Not because it’s completed

But in Me it’s finished; it is done.

I’ve surrounded you with warriors

Both here and the realms about

Because you are my mighty soldier

And it’s time for My Spirit to go out.

It is time for truth and justice

For you, dear one, are mine

You’ve struggled and cried out

I saw and heard you every time.

Take courage and know I’m with you

You will never be left alone

For you are ready and I’ve made you able

It is I who sits on the throne.

With you comes great strength

With you comes great power

With you comes far more

That the enemy will never devour.

So walk this walk with Me

In My arms you’re always free

For I am your Creator

Now live as you’re meant to be.

THE LENS OF FREEDOM

We live in the Land of the Free
But in 2020 still couldn’t see
That not all our brothers and sisters
Are treated the way they should be
While too many have lived their lives
Thinking their experiences were just like others
Only seeing through a small lens
While people continued to hurt each other.

Today, I see a grander and better picture beginning to take form
Not just in what is happening now, but in what hasn’t happened before . . .
People buying so many books, to learn and to grow
Having real conversations about the pain they somehow didn’t know
Understanding now that others live with such great fear
Not just once or twice, but every day of every year
Finally acknowledging that enough is finally enough
I can now see the lens truly widening
May we become the America we should all have dreamed of.
