THE POWER OF BEFORE

Before I could breathe, God gave me life

Before I could sin, He became my sacrifice

Before I could love Him, He first loved me

Before I knew my worth, He died to set me free

Before I could doubt, He gave the Word as my guide

Before I knew His plans, He shined my path with light

For before I ever was, He had always been

And I was already a reality, to the One who made me His.

MY FATHER, MI PADRE

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve taken time to reflect

On you as my dad and what that’s meant

With the strength of an army, you showed love

For the sake of family and our Lord God above

Working so hard, even giving up your dreams

Each decision made to set my sister and me free

Often talking with me for hours, with my curious mind

What you didn’t know, you encouraged me to find

Helping me grow strong in mind, spirit and heart

I can never thank you enough for doing your part

You gave me a love for good food, music, and dance

You provided me a good education to give me a chance

You instilled in me a pride of heritage as a Puerto Rican, an American

You encouraged me to explore again and again

You helped raise this independent daughter, empowered from shy to bold

You pushed me to make my own choices, out of your control

You believe I could be a world changer, wherever God guided me

To create a family of my own and to follow my dreams

And I’m thankful for the father you have fought hard to be

So that no matter what happened, I could be me.

The battle you have feared

You’ve already overcome

Not because it’s completed

But in Me it’s finished; it is done.

I’ve surrounded you with warriors

Both here and the realms about

Because you are my mighty soldier

And it’s time for My Spirit to go out.

It is time for truth and justice

For you, dear one, are mine

You’ve struggled and cried out

I saw and heard you every time.

Take courage and know I’m with you

You will never be left alone

For you are ready and I’ve made you able

It is I who sits on the throne.

With you comes great strength

With you comes great power

With you comes far more

That the enemy will never devour.

So walk this walk with Me

In My arms you’re always free

For I am your Creator

Now live as you’re meant to be.

THE LENS OF FREEDOM

We live in the Land of the Free
But in 2020 still couldn’t see
That not all our brothers and sisters
Are treated the way they should be
While too many have lived their lives
Thinking their experiences were just like others
Only seeing through a small lens
While people continued to hurt each other.

Today, I see a grander and better picture beginning to take form
Not just in what is happening now, but in what hasn’t happened before . . .
People buying so many books, to learn and to grow
Having real conversations about the pain they somehow didn’t know
Understanding now that others live with such great fear
Not just once or twice, but every day of every year
Finally acknowledging that enough is finally enough
I can now see the lens truly widening
May we become the America we should all have dreamed of.

NEVER FORGOTTEN: A Memorial Day Tribute

May we all remember those who died

Who went into service willing to pay the price

For those who gave the ultimate sacrifice

All so we could freely live our lives

And may we never forget those soldiers, brave

From the very first to the ones recently laid

We honor you, each Memorial Day

And may we always show our thanks in the way we live today.

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

I went through my day seeing so many others
No matter the person they were a sister or brother
Each one beautiful in so many different ways
Hair color, complexion or the words they’d say
A smile, a gesture, an act that was kind
Wherever I looked, there was so much to find
Tears of joy when someone stopped to lend aid
Children laughing with each other as they played
Someone helping another to walk across the street
Another one ensuring a family had something to eat
A teenager texting, “I’m so thankful you exist.”
Each moment a sign that this is how we should live
For we are not all gifted in the exact same ways
We are all amazing in how we’re uniquely made
But when we seek to understand, it’s easier to see
The human race, connected, is how we must be.

What This is All About

REFLECTION

Lord, may I reflect all that You are

To those I encounter

Please show them Your heart
Through the words that I say

And the actions I do

May I go unnoticed

As they only see You

And while I am just trying

To walk in Your ways

May You receive the glory

All honor and praise.
